Train Operations
Narrator
Reading from a prepared script, the Narrator rides on the train and uses the public address system to point out the historic sights along the trip.
Train Crew
Our friendly train crew makes a ride on the Wilmington & Western a trip to remember! As a member of the crew, you’ll ride on the train, punching tickets and conversing with the passengers. Starting as a Trainman, you can progress to Brakeman and Conductor.
Engine Crew
Once qualified on the train crew, you can move into the locomotive cab as a Fireman and Engineer. You’ll learn what it takes to operate a diesel or steam locomotive.
Track Crew
With a lot of enthusiasm and a little training, you can help maintain our tracks and learn both old and new methods of track reconstruction.
Shop Crew
As a member of our shop crew, you’ll work with a project leader to repair and maintain our historic collection of steam and diesel locomotives, as well as our antique coaches and cabooses.
Greenbank Station
Ticket Agent
Our ticket agents greet visitors, sell tickets and answer questions at Greenbank Station on operating days.
Gift Shop Personnel
Gift Shop personnel work in our Gift Shop and assist with sales and general information requests on operating days.

How do I become a volunteer?
Complete and submit our Volunteer Application using the button below. If you have any questions about the application or about volunteering, you can either submit your question via our Contact page, or call the Business Office at (302) 998-1930. Once we receive your application, we’ll make arrangements for you to meet with our Volunteer Operations Coordinator who will familiarize you with the areas in which volunteers are needed and answer any questions you may have.
What is the minimum age to volunteer?
You must be at least 15 years of age to volunteer.
In what areas of the railroad are volunteers needed?
Volunteers are needed in all areas of our operation. From train crew to ticket sales, and from onboard train narrator to grounds crew, there are many areas in which we can use your help. Please see the Volunteer Opportunities tab for more detailed information.
I don’t want to work on the trains. Is there anything else I can do?
Yes. We are always looking for people who have unique skills and talents. Running a railroad isn’t just about operating trains; it also involves marketing, landscaping, grant writing, event planning and many other non-railroad jobs.
Do I need any prior railroading experience to volunteer?
No. All you need is a willingness to learn and a desire to work. Although some knowledge of trains is a plus, we’ll be more than happy to train you in whatever area of volunteering you’re interested.
Can I become a volunteer if I have prior railroading experience?
Yes. We have several volunteers who currently work for Class I, shortlines, and other tourist railroads. We’ll start you in a position that best suits your prior experience.
