IN WHAT AREAS OF THE RAILROAD ARE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED?
Volunteers are needed in all areas of our operation. From train crew to ticket sales, and from onboard train narrator to grounds crew, there are many areas in which we can use your help. Please see the Volunteer Opportunities page for more detailed information.
I DON'T WANT TO WORK ON THE TRAINS ... IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I CAN DO?
Yes. We are always looking for people who have unique skills and talents. Running a railroad isn't just about operating trains; it also involves marketing, publicity, grant writing, event planning and many other non-railroad jobs.
HOW DO I BECOME A VOLUNTEER?
First, you must do one of two things: 1) complete the form on our Contact Us page and check the box marked "I'm interested in becoming a volunteer," or 2) call the Business Office at the number listed at the bottom of every page. You'll then meet with our Volunteer Coordinator who will familiarize you with the areas in which volunteers are needed and answer any questions you may have. If you decide you do want to become a volunteer, you'll then be asked to become a member of Historic Red Clay Valley Inc., the railroad's parent organization. We'll then work with you to set up some dates on which you can come and train with a current, qualified volunteer.
DO I NEED ANY PRIOR EXPERIENCE IN RAILROADING TO BE A VOLUNTEER?
No. All you need is a willingness to learn and a desire to work. Although some knowledge of trains is a plus, we'll be more than happy to train you in whatever area of volunteering you're interested.
DO I HAVE TO VOLUNTEER A CERTAIN NUMBER OF HOURS IN A GIVEN TIME PERIOD?
Yes and no. Some volunteers work every weekend and others work one day every other month. We are grateful for any service you can give us - the amount of time you wish to donate to the railroad is entirely up to you. However, you must work at least 50 hours a year to be considered an "Active Volunteer," and there are incentives to being an Active Volunteer. Also, certain jobs, like steam locomotive engineer, for example, require a substantial time investment that will take many years to accomplish if you only work one day a month.
CAN I VOLUNTEER IN MORE THAN ONE AREA OF SERVICE?
Absolutely! You are more than welcome to participate in more than one area of service. In fact, many of our volunteers are qualified to do multiple jobs. And if you start in one area of service and decide it's not for you, you're more than welcome to try other areas of service to find the one that suits you best.
